Focus on Omega-3 Oils
Omega oils have become a new buzzword among the health conscious, with particular focus on omega-3s. It’s no surprise, as studies suggest numerous health benefits to be had from omega-3 consumption, including raising levels of HDL (“good” cholesterol) and supporting a healthy cardiovascular system.
Fish are widely recognized as the ideal food source for omega-3s, but alternatives exist for those concerned about avoiding contamination, maintaining a vegetarian diet or reducing the negative environmental impact of overfishing. In this case, it pays to go directly to the source — oil-rich fish obtain their omega-3s from a diet of microscopic algae, which contains a wider spectrum of omega-3 oils than other plant sources.
While more omega-enriched foods are appearing on store shelves, individual servings contain only minimal levels of omega-3. Supplementation that includes ingredients derived from algae may be the best non-fish source for a daily omega-3 regimen.
